For over three decades cellist Christopher Costanza has enjoyed a varied and exciting career as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. A winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and a recipient of a prestigious Solo Recitalists Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Mr. Costanza has performed to wide critical acclaim in nearly every state in the U.S., and in Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea, Germany, France, the U.K., Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, and Hungary.

Robert Jesselson is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches cello and plays in the American Arts Trio and the Jesselson/Fugo Duo. In 2013 he was named as the Governor’s Professor of the Year by the SC Commission on Higher Education.

Joshua Roman has earned an international reputation for his wide-ranging repertoire, a commitment to communicating the essence of music in visionary ways, artistic leadership and versatility. As well as being a celebrated performer, he is recognized as an accomplished composer and curator, and was named a TED Senior Fellow in 2015. Joshua Roman is a cellist, accomplished composer and curator whose performances embrace musical styles from Bach to Radiohead. Before setting off on his unique path as a soloist, Roman was the Seattle Symphony’s principal cellist - a job he began at just 22 years of age and left only two years later. He has since become renowned for his genre-bending repertoire and wide-ranging collaborations. Roman was named a TED Senior Fellow in 2015. His live performance of the complete Six Suites for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach on TED's Facebook Page garnered 1.8M live viewers, with millions more for his Main Stage TED Talks/Performances, including an improvisational performance with Tony-winner/MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Bill T. Jones and East African vocalist Somi.

A versatile artist, cellist Carol Ou is known for her “fiery, marvelous” and “meltingly melodic outpourings” (Boston Globe) and her “wonderfully pure cello tone and incisive technique.” (The Strad) A founding member of the L'Eveque Trio, Carol was a member of the Carpe Diem String Quartet and a longtime duo partner of legendary violinist James Buswell. Her solo and chamber music concerts have taken her to prestigious concert venues across the globe. Other collaborations have been with renowned artists Hillary Hahn, Timothy Eddy, Pascal Rogé, András Schiff, Raul Juarena, and Jayme Stone at the Marlboro Music Festival, Summerfest La Jolla, Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Nevada Chamber Music Festival, Cremona International Music Festival and Academy, and other noted music festivals.

CelloChat: Lluís Claret – The Joy of Practicing!

Born in 1951 in Andorra la Vella to exiled Andorran parents, LLUÍS CLARET began his musical studies at the age of nine. In 1964 he moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he won major distinctions at the Conservatory of the Liceu, and began working with Enric Casals. He continued his studies in France, Italy, and in the United States, with masters such as Maurice Gendron and Radu Aldulescu. Claret has said that his personal meetings with György Sebök, Eva Janzer, and Bernard Greenhouse were also implemental in the development of his artistic personality. Claret’s professional career was launched into the international spotlight after he took first prizes at the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in 1976 and the Rostropovich Cello Competition in 1977.

Israeli-Mexican-American cellist Michal Shein is a performer, community organizer and master educator focused on curating cross-cultural performance projects and intensive educational initiatives. In 2021, she founded the Cellísimo Festival, an intensive high level cello festival for Spanish speaking cellists which includes masterclasses with world-class faculty, special lectures and wellness sessions. Michal is recognized for her pedagogical style that nurtures her students with effective pedagogical methods for solid and positive musical advancement. Her students have been winners in competitions, have received admission to top festivals such as BUTI Tanglewood, Brevard, YOLA Festival, Greenwood, National Symphony Summer Institute, and have played in masterclasses for cellists in top conservatories in the U.S.

Cellist Kathryn Bates’ boundless energy for sharing musical experiences has shaped a career that continues to explore the intersections of tradition and innovation. Praised for her “beautifully rounded sound” by the New York Times, Kathryn’s performances are characterized by a dancer’s sense of rhythm and captivating theatricality. Projects range from her recent tongue-in-check solo cello recording of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (“Inspire Christmas” album on Sono Luminus) to performances during Elliott Carter 100th Birthday anniversary celebration at Tanglewood that were called the “revelation” of the concert (Sequenza 21) and “electrifying” (Boston Globe). Cellist of the San Francisco-based Del Sol Quartet since 2010, Kathryn has established herself as an important voice in the contemporary music world, as musician, collaborator and curator.

Cellist Michael Haber is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brandeis University and did graduate work at Harvard and Indiana University. His cello teachers were Janos Starker, Mihaly Virizlay and Gregor Piatigorsky. He is a former member of The Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell, the Casals Festival Orchestra under Pablo Casals and was the principal cellist of the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. As cellist of the Composers Quartet, in residence at Columbia University, he toured and recorded internationally, as he did with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. For more than 20 years, he was the cellist of The Gabrielli Trio.

Described as a “sought-after professor of cello whose methods of teaching have garnered global acclaim,” Richard Aaron is a professor of cello. He has served at the University of Michigan and at the Juilliard School since 2006 and 2007, respectively. In fall 2024, he will join the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Previously he taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the New England Conservatory.
