Overview

The Johansen International Competition is a triennial competition sponsored by the Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, Inc., and was established in 1997. The JIC is made possible through the generosity of a charitable trust established by the late Anna Storch Johansen of Falls Church, Virginia. Mrs. Johansen was a violinist and a Life Member of the FMMC. She wanted to encourage young musicians with significant prize awards at a time when they need it most and when they must make decisions about whether to continue with their dedication to music.

Students of violin, viola, and cello, ages 13-17 years, are eligible. Awards include $67,000 in prize money as well as performance opportunities. Separate prizes are given for first, second, and third place for violin, viola, and cello, with an additional prize for best performance of a commissioned work for a total of 10 prizes.
