CelloChat: Colin Carr – Things Which Drive Me Nuts!

Colin Carr appears throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher. He has played with major orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, Montréal and all the major orchestras of Australia and New Zealand. Conductors with whom he has worked include Rattle, Gergiev, Dutoit, Elder, Skrowasczewski and Marriner. He has been a regular guest at the BBC Proms and has twice toured Australia.

CelloChat: Malcolm Parson – How to Practice Scales for Improvising

Malcolm Parson is best known for his work as a member of both Turtle Island Quartet and Carolina Chocolate Drops. As a composer, he ​had his first break in 2019 by collaborating with Brian McOmber on the soundtrack to Little Woods (dir. Nia Dacosta). Since then, his film work has continued with projects such as Good Ol Girl, Ballet After Dark, Laying Flowers.:.Setting Fires, The Sentence of Michael Thompson, If I Go Will They Miss Me, Love Lizzo and currently The Secrets Of Hillsong. As a cellist, he has performed on several featured films including Palmer, A Man Named Scott, Kingdom of Silence, Mudbound, and Blow The Man Down. Recently he was the string arranger for Spencer Zahn and Dawn Richard's"Pigments"and "Pele" by Luedji Luna feat. Mereba.

CelloChat: Hai-Ye Ni – How to Take an Orchestra Audition & Life After Audition

Hai-Ye Ni joined The Philadelphia Orchestra as principal cello at the beginning of the 2006–07 season after having served as associate principal cello of the New York Philharmonic since 1999. During the 2010–11 season she was featured on a Philadelphia Orchestra concert as soloist in Tan Dun’s The Map, Concerto for Cello, Video, and Orchestra. She made her solo debut with the Orchestra in January 2010 in Saint-Saens’s Cello Concerto No. 1. She first came into prominence after her critically praised New York debut at Alice Tully Hall in 1991, a result of her winning first prize at the Naumburg International Cello Competition.

Laurence Vittes was born and grew up in Los Angeles; his father was a writer and his mother a teacher. He trained as a cellist, a librarian and a critic. His company was a major supplier to the music and recordings collections of the Library of Congress, Bibliothèque Nationale, British Library, Stanford, Harvard and Yale. He introduced French Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, Chandos and Naxos to the North American market. Laurence believes that writing about music unleashes the potential of the classical music industry. He writes for the Huffington Post, Gramophone, Bachtrack, Strings, Audiophile Audition, and the Southern California Early Music Society.

CelloChat: Mark Kosower – Cello in the Symphony Orchestra

A modern player with a “signature sound” and distinctive style of playing, cellist Mark Kosower embodies the concept of the complete musician performing as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras, in solo recitals, and as a much admired and sought-after chamber musician. He is Principal Cello of The Cleveland Orchestra and a scholar and teacher of cello. Mark’s performance repertoire and discography are testaments to a deep devotion, not only to frequently heard repertoire such as Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations and concertos of Haydn, Walton, Elgar and Dvořák but, significantly, to less well-known concertos of Alberto Ginastera, Miklos Rozsa, Frederich Gulda and Victor Herbert.

CelloKids: Musicianship in the Body – Part 1

Through games and activities, Dalcroze allows students to dive deeper into their repertoire away from their instrument. Dalcroze isn’t only fun, but it helps students develop a stronger understanding of the piece they’re learning. They’ll explore key musical elements like rhythm, meter and phrasing deeply through movement, before applying their learning to the cello. These CelloBello classes will be led by a wonderful co-teaching duo: Mira Larson and Sandra Halleran (find their bios below). Class time will be divided between time at the cello and time exploring the repertoire through the lens of Dalcroze—so please bring your instruments! Students will leave feeling empowered to ace these pieces in their next lesson or performance.
