Claudio Bohórquez

The German-born cellist of Peruvian-Uruguayan descent CLAUDIO BOHÓRQUEZ is one of the most sought-after musicians in his field. As a student of the notorious Boris Pergamenschikow in Cologne and Berlin, Claudio Bohórquez achieved success at an early age at international competitions such as the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow and the Rostropovich Cello Competition in Paris.

In 1995 he won First Prize at the International Competition in Geneva, which opened the way for his successful solo career. In 2000 he won a prize at the Pablo Casals Competition held under the auspices of the Kronberg Academy.

Bohórquez has performed with almost all German orchestras, as well as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Musikum Basel, Orchestre de Paris, St. Martin in the Fields, NHK Symphony Orchestra – Tokyo, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, etc. Renowned conductors he has worked with include Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Neville Marriner, Manfred Honeck,  Krzysztof Penderecki, Leonard Slatkin, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos, Andres Orozco-Estrada, David Zinman.

He is a guest at numerous prestigious festivals: the City of London Festival, the Penderecki Festival in Warsaw and the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, at the Tanglewood, Ravinia and Aspen Festival as well as the Hollywood Bowl. He participated in the chamber music festival Lockenhaus in Austria and “Les Musiques” in Basel.

Claudio Bohorquez’s discography includes recordings of chamber works by Schumann and Brahms with pianist Péter Nagy ; Claude Debussy, Sergei Prokofiev and Benjamin Britten with pianist Markus Groh. He soloed in a recording of Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote with the Dresden Philharmonic conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and in a series of CDs – chamber music with various performers. The musician is also known for his participation in the soundtrack of the film project “Ten Minutes Older – The Cello”.

Meanwhile, Bohorques has become a teacher himself: from 2011 to 2016 he was professor in cello at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart, in September 2016 he was appointed to the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin, where he has been a guest professor since 2003.

Claudio Bohórquez plays a Giovanni Battista Rogeri violoncello presented to him by the Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg.
