Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) was born in Lucca, northern Italy and spent much of his life employed as a cellist and composer by the Spanish royal family. Boccherini composed over 30 sonatas for cello and basso continuo. The most famous among these are the six sonatas published in London by Bremner in 1771. Sonata No. 6 in A Major opens with a highly ornamented Adagio that features a brief cadenza, followed by a virtuosic Allegro designed to showcase Boccherini’s technical prowess.
