From the late 1870s until 1885, Tchaikovsky experienced restlessness, disorientation, and uncertainty regarding his creative abilities. His Valse Sentimentale is the final of Six Pieces, (Six Morceaux Op. 51). Charming and intimate miniatures for piano, they were written in 1882 during this particularly challenging period in the composer’s life.
