CelloKids: Musicianship Through the Body – New Pathways, Part 2 with Andrea Yun and Horacio Contreras

Our CelloKids classes utilize a unique curriculum that fuses the Dalcroze Method with musicianship on the cello. In these classes, we will relate movement experiences and musical concepts together so that students begin to understand these ideas in an organic way. Then, in the follow-up class, our cello faculty will help the students find ways to adapt this embodied information to their cello playing, making the learning come full circle: sound-ear-body-sight-cello. This curriculum is being pioneered and co-taught by Horacio Contreras, Jeremy Dittus, and Andrea Yun. Classes will be offered in both English and Spanish.

Drawing on the vast experiences of a diverse teaching team, this intensive, virtual summer seminar will cover a broad array of subjects relevant to cello teachers at all levels of experience. Topics this year include explorations in shifting and vibrato, practice strategies for busy students, applying Feldenkreis Principles in your teaching, essentials for cello beginners, early steps in developing keyboard visualization, the art of cadenza writing and many, many more. Our classes are designed to bolster pedagogical knowledge and skills, with opportunities for participants to engage directly with our faculty in both formal and informal Q & A settings. Faculty in 2023 include master teachers Paul Katz, Tanya Carey, Mark Churchill, Sandra Halleran, Khari Joyner, Alison Bazala Kim, Kee-Hyun Kim, Ken Kubota, Jisoo Ok, Aristides Rivas, and David Ying.

CelloKids: Your Bow is a Paintbrush! Exploring Your Sound and Color Palette with Erin Breene – Part 1

In these virtual classes, students will explore different ways of expressing themselves through their bows. Concepts will include developing tone and stroke control, how to spin your sound, as well as learning how to communicate musical ideas with more clarity. Through interactive games, students will develop tools to unlock their bow’s expressive possibilities. These classes will be led by the wonderful Erin Breene, who joins us from our partners at Chamber Music | OC, which is one of Southern California’s only pre-professional classical music training programs.

Audition Preparation Workshop 2023

CelloBello’s Audition Preparation Workshop is a virtual seminar designed to help prospective undergraduate and graduate students prepare for their school auditions, including the prescreening process. This two-week intensive features masterclasses, private lessons, and panel discussions, all centered around empowering students with the tools to succeed in their auditions.

CelloKids: Musicianship in the Body – Part 1

Through games and activities, Dalcroze allows students to dive deeper into their repertoire away from their instrument. Dalcroze isn’t only fun, but it helps students develop a stronger understanding of the piece they’re learning. They’ll explore key musical elements like rhythm, meter and phrasing deeply through movement, before applying their learning to the cello. These CelloBello classes will be led by a wonderful co-teaching duo: Mira Larson and Sandra Halleran (find their bios below). Class time will be divided between time at the cello and time exploring the repertoire through the lens of Dalcroze—so please bring your instruments! Students will leave feeling empowered to ace these pieces in their next lesson or performance.
